Common Questions About IDOT Safety Lane Inspections
Real answers to the questions we get most often. Don't see yours? Call us at (847) 871-6264.
Do I need an appointment?
No. We're a walk-in safety lane. Just drive up during business hours (Mon–Fri 7am–3pm, Sat 7am–12pm) and we'll get you in. No scheduling, no paperwork ahead of time.
How long does the inspection take?
Most inspections are done in 15–30 minutes. School buses and rebuilt salvage inspections can take a little longer because of the additional paperwork and checks involved.
What do I need to bring?
Vehicle registration, driver's license, and payment. For rebuilt salvage inspections you'll also need the salvage title plus your receipts for major parts (frame, engine, transmission, body components). For school bus inspections bring your prior inspection report.
How much does an inspection cost?
$20 per axle plus a $1 sticker fee for most commercial vehicles. School buses are a flat $49 + $1 sticker. A 2-axle truck is $41 total. A 5-axle semi is $101 total. Payment is due before the inspection — pass or fail. Cash, business check, or credit card (credit card adds a $3 surcharge).
What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?
We give you a written report listing exactly what didn't pass. Fix the issues and come back within 30 days for a free re-inspection. After 30 days a full new inspection fee applies. We don't do repairs ourselves — we'll point you in the right direction so you can get the work done.
Do you do emissions tests?
No — emissions tests are different from IDOT safety lane inspections. For Illinois emissions testing, visit the Illinois EPA Vehicle Emissions Testing program to find an official station.
Do you do FMCSA (federal DOT) annual inspections?
We specialize in Illinois IDOT safety lane inspections, which is what most intrastate commercial vehicles in Illinois need. If you operate interstate (across state lines), you may also need a separate annual FMCSA federal inspection. Not sure which one you need? Call us at (847) 871-6264 and we'll walk you through it.
What's the difference between a rebuilt salvage inspection and a regular safety inspection?
A rebuilt salvage inspection is a one-time IDOT inspection required before the Secretary of State will issue a rebuilt title for a vehicle that was previously branded salvage. It's more thorough than a regular 6-month safety inspection — we verify all repairs, match part receipts, and confirm the vehicle is roadworthy. Read our full guide to Illinois rebuilt title inspections for the full process.
