Quick answer: No, we don’t do emissions tests

If you’re searching for "emissions test near me," "emission testing Mount Prospect," or "Illinois emissions testing locations," you’re in the wrong place. James Drive Safety Lane is an IDOT-certified safety lane inspection station — that’s a different inspection program run by the Illinois Department of Transportation, not the EPA.

Illinois emissions testing (the kind required when you renew your license plate sticker) is run by the Illinois EPA’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program, also called the Illinois Air Team. Those tests happen at separate facilities. The good news: there are several within a 20-minute drive of Mount Prospect, and the test is free.

Tips for Your Emissions Test

Since you’re already on the page, here’s what makes an emissions test go faster.

Drive 15+ minutes first

Your engine and catalytic converter need to be fully warmed up. Highway driving works better than stop-and-go.

Don’t disconnect the battery beforehand

Doing that resets your readiness monitors and you’ll get rejected — even if your car is fine.

Check engine light = automatic fail

Get it fixed before you go. A lit check engine light fails every OBD-II emissions test, no exceptions.

Bring your renewal notice

Or your VIN. Tightens up the gas cap before you go too — a loose one is the #1 reason cars fail.

It’s free

No charge for the test itself. The state pays for it. If a station tries to charge you, you’re at the wrong place.

15–30 minutes total

Including the wait. Mid-week mornings and right after lunch are the fastest times. Saturdays get busy.

Other Things We Don’t Do (So You Don’t Drive Out for Nothing)

❌ Diesel Emissions Testing

We don’t do diesel opacity tests or any kind of emissions testing on diesel vehicles. For commercial diesel emissions, contact a private testing facility certified by your state.

❌ FMCSA Federal DOT Inspections

We do Illinois state DOT safety inspections only — not federal FMCSA inspections (annual DVIRs). Those are usually handled by your fleet’s mechanic or a federally certified inspector.

❌ License Plate Sticker Renewals

For passenger car plate renewals, use the Illinois Secretary of State website or visit a Currency Exchange. We only issue safety lane decals for commercial vehicles we’ve inspected.

❌ Auto Repair

We’re an inspection station, not a repair shop. If your vehicle fails our inspection, we’ll tell you exactly what needs fixing so you can take it to your mechanic.
